I set out to make each piece the best I possibly can, with little regard for time or convenience. Rather than cutting corners, I go out of my way to make more.
My work is the culmination of the artistic skills I forged over the course of my entire life. From the air drying clay and crayons I used as a child with an active imagination, to the cutting edge technologies I utilized in design school like CAD software and 3D printing, I always set out to make my work a s beautiful and complex as I could.
Woodcarving allows me to channel my talents into a medium that consistently results in more beauty than I could ever create myself. The endless variety of complex forms within wood grain interests me to no end. I strive to present those patterns as clearly as I can by excessively sanding and polishing my sculptures, so that as many of these details are brought out of the wood as possible.
I see the sculptures and furniture I make as collaborative works between nature and myself. Each piece is a showcase of the hidden intricacy and elegance that’s fundamental to the world we live in. Though it takes time and dedication to uncover these aspects of otherwise ordinary or unassuming woods, they're always waiting to be revealed beneath the surface.
Everything I make is carved and sanded by me. No CNC or computerized technology aids my process, each piece is painstakingly handcrafted.
When I started my journey as a woodcarver, I was fascinated by the way wood grain would gain clarity and hidden forms would emerge as it's sanded.
If you're unfamiliar with woodworking, sanding is a gradual process where increasingly fine grits are used to make wood smooth. Ordinary woodworkers start at 80 grit and work up to 220. As a lifelong artist obsessed with the quality of my work, I knew I could push this further and achieve interesting results.
The sculpture shown in the video above was sanded entirely to 3,000 grit, and I've taken others up to 10,000. Grits that fine are typically reserved for applications such as auto body work and precious stones, so it makes wood grain glimmer like gems and precious metals. The details transform and change colors while you move around it in a mesmerizing way. It's extremely laborious to take it that far, but it makes the wood look absolutely stunning.
Through the synergy of my intricate, ethereal carving style and the thorough polishing of the wood, my dreamlike creations appear as though they're made of an otherworldly liquid frozen in time. That's where the name Liquid Dream Creations comes from.
