Solid surfaces are acrylic sheets made to look like stones such as granite and marble. This arms and body of this cross started out as one long piece I carved as an experiment in working with this new material. I accidentally dropped it, and the pieces it broke into just happened to be perfectly proportioned to become a cross. With my new plan, I had another idea.
The material is translucent, so I decided to make it glow. To make room for the lights, I built it up as a hollow box with a layer of clear plexiglass sandwiched between the carving and a back plate. The plexiglass allows the 15 feet of string light inside shine so bright that this sculpture is also able to act as a lamp. The details in the material are highly pronounced after being sanded to 10,000 grit.
