Bookmatching is when wood is cut into 2 pieces that mirror each other on one face and are joined symmetrically. I got some maple burl cut offs to try out this technique, with the intention of carving it mostly symmetrically while still keeping some of the unequal features of both sides.
The bottom of bookmatched wood doesnt have mirrored grain like the top, so I continued the carvings from the top into the bottom in a way similar to my usual style.
I wanted it to represent the duality of order and chaos, both intertwining together, inseparable and part of the same whole.
